- Edgartown Public Library Won LEED Silver Certification
December 7, 2017: The new Edgartown Public Library project earned a LEED Silver certification. The certification was based on the LEED 2009 rating system. AWE engineers are again proud of being part of the project team that contributed to this achievement. Based on measured energy consumption data collected earlier this year, the library building’s Y2017 energy performance beats other similar Massachusetts libraries renovated in recent years by a factor of 3.5 to 5.5, in terms of energy use intensity (kBTU/SF).
- Bridgewater Academy Building Won LEED Silver Certification
February 27, 2017: The historic Bridgewater Academy Building renovation project earned LEED Silver certification. The certification was based on the LEED 2009 rating system. AWE engineers are proud to be part of the project team that contributed to this achievement.
- Ribbon Cutting of the Historic Bridgewater Academy Building
On December 4, 2016, official ribbon cutting ceremony was held for the historic Bridgewater Academy Building. Congratulations to the Town of Bridgewater! AWE, collaborating with Boston-based Tappé Architects, were the MEP/FP engineers and energy modeling consultant for the renovation of this historic building.
- Feasibility Study on Newton Free Library and Marlborough Public Library Begins
October 25, 2016: AWE Engineers have started the MEP/FP feasibility study work on the Newton Free Library renovation and expansion project. The busiest library building (in terms of borrowing) and second most visited library in Massachusetts, Newton Free Library currently comprises 91,566 SF on three floors. The library will be fully modernized and expanded to about 110,000 SF. AWE will be collaborating with the Rhode Island based architectural firm LLB Architects on this project.
Also collaborating with LLB Architects, AWE is starting the MEP/FP feasibility study work on another public library: the Marlborough Public Library in Marlborough, Massachusetts. The existing Carnegie library will be renovated and expanded. The completed new facility will be about 42,800 SF.
- Geothermal and Solar PV Systems Engineering Completed for Private Residence
AWE has completed engineering for a new private residence in Newton, MA. A geothermal heating and cooling system and a solar Photo-voltaic system were engineered for the 5000+ SF house. In addition to radiant floor heating, the geothermal heat pumps will also provide heat source for domestic hot water production, fully utilizing the high efficiency of the geothermal system. The electricity produced by the solar PV system will partially offset the electricity consumption by the geothermal heat pumps, making the overall building systems highly efficient.
- Edgartown Public Library Celebrates Grand Opening
On June 25, 2016, the new Edgartown Public Library on the island of Martha’s Vineyard celebrated its grand opening. As the project’s MEP/FP engineer, AWE worked closely with New York-based Imrey Studio and Boston-based Tappé Architects to help bring about the successful completion of this beautiful library building. AWE also provided energy modeling service for the project, which targeted for LEED Silver.

- AWE’s principal George Hu presents at the ASHRAE Product Show
At the biannual ASHRAE Product Show on April 12, 2016, at the Lantana, Randolph, MA, AWE’s principal George Hu, P.E., LEED AP, presented again on the subject of Geothermal HVAC in New England: Part II, Case Studies. The audience followed up with engaging questions and discussions after the interesting projects were presented. 1.0 PDH was available for the attendees.
- AWE Bronze Award Winner for 2016 ACEC/MA Engineering Excellence Competition
On March 16, 2016, George Hu, AWE’s president, attended the 2016 ACEC/MA Engineering Excellence Competition Award Gala in Cambridge, MA. A big crowd of engineers from all trades attended the event. AWE had the honor to won a Bronze Award. The award was based on our submission of the LEED Platinum Athol Public Library Renovation and New Addition project completed in 2013. AWE provided Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing and Fire Protection engineering as well as energy modeling services for the project.
- George Hu presents at ASHRAE Boston Chapter on Geothermal HVAC in New England – Basics and Applications
The turnout was great for the seminar “Geothermal HVAC in New England – the Basics and Applications”, presented by AWE’s principal, George Hu, on March 8, 2016, at the ASHRAE Boston Chapter in Boston. According to Stacie Suh, ASHRAE Boston Chapter president, the turnout was one of the greatest in recent ASHRAE Boston Chapter technical sessions, about double its usual attendance size.
- AWE is Bronze Winner for 2016 ACEC/MA Engineering Excellence Competition

AWE has been selected as a Bronze Winner for the 2016 ACEC/MA Engineering Excellence Competition! The winning was based on the Athol Public Library Renovation and New Addition project for which AWE was the MEP/FP engineer. The project was completed in 2013, and it achieved the LEED Platinum certification by the USGBC. Thanks to all who have contributed to the success of this outstanding project!
- AWE making progress in MEP/FP engineering for Newton Center for the Culture & Arts

AWE has completed the schematic design package for the renovation project of Newton center for the culture and arts. This is adaptive reuse renovation of the 18,800 SF historic landmark Nathaniel Allen House. Working with DLA Architecture, AWE is the MEP/FP engineer for the project. To meet the many challenges of this complex historic structure, a geothermal heating and cooling system is expected to be installed for the renovated building.
- Geothermal HVAC for Massachusetts Hospital School
AWE has been hired to provide geothermal peer review and design assistance for the Massachusetts Hospital School renovation project in Canton, MA. The project includes the 108,000 SF high school and the 5,800 SF elementary school. A geothermal heating and cooling system will be designed to serve both school buildings.
- Successful Completion of New Private Residence Project with Geothermal System
May 26, 2015: The 10,000 SF new private residence project in Concord, MA has come to a successful completion. Collaborating with Cambridge-based architect, Gund Partnership, AWE engineered a closed-loop geothermal HVAC system for the house. The geothermal system included space heating and cooling, indoor pool water heating, pool room dehumidification, as well as radiant floor heating for certain parts of the house.
- Geothermal Ground Loop System Started up for Private Residence
December 23, 2014: The geothermal ground loop system of a private residence has been up and running. Collaborating with Cambridge-based architect, Gund Partnership, AWE engineered the closed-loop geothermal HVAC system for the 10,000 SF private residence in Concord, MA.
- Bridgewater Academy Building Renovation Project Making Progress with Construction Documents
December 16, 2014: AWE is designing the MEP/FP and Tel/Data systems for this project, collaborating with Boston-based Tappé Architects. Project is progressing with construction documents.
- AWE Starts Keene Public Library Study
August 18, 2014: AWE started MEP/FP study for Keene Public Library for the City of Keene, NH. AWE will be collaborating with Boston-based Tappé Architects for this work.

July 21, 2014: The Athol Public Library renovation and new addition project achieved LEED Platinum! AWE collaborated with the Boston-based architectural firm Tappé Associates as the MEP/FP engineer and the energy modeling consultant on this 21,000 sf 1915 historic Carnegie library.
